What counts as a dental emergency?
- Severe or persistent toothache
- Swelling of the gum or face
- A broken, chipped or cracked tooth
- A knocked-out adult tooth
- A lost filling, crown or bridge
- Bleeding that won't stop, or signs of infection such as a fever
Go to A&E or call 999 straight away if swelling is affecting your breathing or swallowing, if bleeding won't stop, or after a serious facial injury or a suspected broken jaw.
What to do before your appointment
Toothache
Take over-the-counter pain relief as directed on the pack, and don't put aspirin on your gum, as it irritates it. Rinsing gently with warm salt water helps keep the area clean.
A broken or chipped tooth
Keep any pieces and bring them with you. Chew on the other side and stick to soft food until we've seen you.
Swelling
Hold a cold compress against your face for short spells. Don't apply heat, which can make swelling worse.
A knocked-out tooth
Pick the tooth up by the crown, not the root, and rinse it gently if it's dirty. Try to put it back in its socket; if you can't, keep it in milk or saliva and call us straight away. The sooner it's treated, the better the chance of saving it.
What happens at your appointment
We'll ask what happened and examine the area, taking digital X-rays if they're needed. Where possible, relieving your pain comes first. Where we can, we'll complete treatment on the day; otherwise we'll stabilise the tooth and book a follow-up to finish it.
